COOKIE DRIVE........6 DAYS TO GO!!!!!
Hello Cookie Drive Volunteer,
Thank you for volunteering with the 2013 Gunfighter Cookie Drive!
The Highlights-
PACKAGING DAY at the Commissary
Monday, 9 December
Curbside Cookie Drop off (7:30-9:30 am)
Packaging Volunteers needed (8 am until about 10-11 am)
Bring a hat, ages 16 and older only in the commissary
The Details-
Cookie Baking Volunteers- Please bake colorful durable cookies for us to package and give to our Airmen in the dorms. Cookies can be dropped off at the curb of the commissary from 7:30-9:30am on Monday, 9 Dec. This means you can drive up to the curb and hand a volunteer your cookies. Drop off should be quick and easy for people on their way to work or dropping off the kids at school. Please bring cookies in a disposable container. If you put your cookies in a Ziploc bag please place them in a clean box to support them. Please volunteer to drop off neighbor’s and co-worker’s cookies and save them the trip. Brownies and other cookie sized yummies like coated pretzels are very welcomed too.
Where to go if you volunteer for curbside collection or assembling Cookie packages- Please come into the commissary to the Deli area so you can sign in and we can show you around. Everyone assembling cookie packages should bring a hat to keep to hair out of the cookies (it’s that or a hair net). After you get a quick tour, wash your hands and start working. We’ll have hot coffee and all the cookie crumbs you can eat.
Curbside Cookie Greeters Volunteers- Cheerful people with warm coats are needed to be at the curb from a little before 7:30 until 9:30am to collect the cookies and to thank our bakers and then bring the cookies in to be put in packages. Santa will be there as well to help out!
Cookie Packaging Volunteers- We will package the cookies in the commissary Deli area. The packaging assembly line will start at 8 am and we’ll work until packaging is complete. Packing time will depend on how many volunteers can come but I think it will take about 2 hours. A dozen cookies will be placed on a Styrofoam tray, and a handmade card put on the bottom of the tray. It will be sealed behind the Deli counter in plastic wrap (like the deli sandwiches). We’ll place a sticker with a greeting on top of all the packages and the cookie packages will be given to our Airmen living in the dorms later that day by the First Sergeants.
More Details- This is a community effort and all active duty, dependents and our friends in the community with base access are welcome to help and join in on the fun. Children can help bake, but only children over 16 years of age should be present for packaging.
THANK YOU!
Brooke Short
PS- Please invite your friends to join us. We would love all the help we can get.

Thanksgiving week
I’d like to express a few thoughts as we start this Thanksgiving week
.
If you are leaving the area, look at the weather forecast
for the areas you will be traveling. Let someone know where you will be going
and what your route is, make sure your cell phone is charged. If you are going
by car, make sure that it is in good working order for the trip.
Understand your limitations and the fact that the holiday
pace may drain you more than you think. Don't leave out for your 8 hour car
trip after working a full day. Don't tell yourself you will be fine to
"drive straight through" so you can spend some extra time at your
destination or get back at a certain time.
Take a little time to reach out to family, an old friend, a
coworker to see how they are doing. Sometimes just hearing from you can make
all the difference in the world.
Remember we are not all home, we are not all with our
families. We all have friends that are deployed, on a remote assignment or
separated from their family and in harm's way because of their service. When
you sit down for your holiday meal, take a moment to remember them. Reach out
to their family and let them know that we are a community, an Air Force family,
which looks after each other (this can't be just words). If you know of someone that needs a place to
go for Thanksgiving let me know, we ALWAYS have room at the Corby
house.
Lastly, please don't drink and drive. Call me at 210-319-8833.
I will come and get you or find a way to get you home safely- PERIOD!
Find something to be thankful for. Take the time to enjoy your family, friends
and your selves. Be safe!

CROSS WALK SAFETY
Gunfighters,
The safety office was recently informed of a near-miss involving a child who was transitioning across a crosswalk near the base school during the early morning hours. After reviewing the incident it was determined that the child failed to press the crosswalk lighting button prior to entering the roadway and simply walked onto the busy crosswalk without looking. As parents, it is vital that we train our children to stop, engage the crosswalk lighting, and wait for traffic to stop prior to entering the roadway. It is also necessary for all of us to be reminded that using a crosswalk does not protect us from being hit by inattentive drivers. I am asking for your assistance along with the assistance of school officials to remind children on safe crosswalk procedures, especially during this time of the year when it is darker during school reporting. Drivers are also cautioned to be attentive in the early morning hours especially when driving on Gunfighter Avenue, Eagle and Mellen Drive where the majority of crosswalks are located.

Col Sarady Tan, 366th Medical Group commander, provided the following statement regarding how the government shutdown will affect the MDG's operations.
"The 366 MDG will remain open during the government shutdown and the hours of operation will remain the same. Inpatient, acute and urgent outpatient care in our medical and dental facilities will continue, as will private sector care under TRICARE. While some delays can be expected, the impact on routine patient care and appointment availability should be minimal."

I will try to update as I am made aware of things. However, please feel free to check the Gunfighter's FB page for updates as we all endure this process together.

Senior Spouse/Key Spouse Crisis Response training/gov't shut down
Email from Tina earlier today...before she was sent home.
Good morning all,
The Senior Spouse/Key Spouse Crisis Response training scheduled for Oct 16th IS STILL A GO! In the event, we are still in government shutdown on the 16th MSgt Fouke and TSgt Hughes WILL STILL conduct the crisis response training. The training will be from 0900-1200 at the Gunfighter Club (I spoke with Mr. Rhodes yesterday and the club will remain open during this time of shutdown).
The first hour of training will consist of explaining who will participate in the EFAC (Emergency Family Assistance Center) and assigned roles and responsibilities. The rest of the time will be spent on table top exercises for a hands on approach to understanding how an EFAC works. So far we have 21 spouses signed up for training. To ensure everyone gets signed up please email MSgt Melvin Fouke (melvin.fouke@us.af.mil) or TSgt Travis Hughes (travis.hughes.1@us.af.mil). This training is not mandatory; however, it is highly encouraged for all Senior Spouses and Key Spouses to attend.
PLEASE DO NOT REPLY TO THIS EMAIL AS I WILL BE OUT OF THE OFFICE UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE AND WILL NOT BE ABLE TO RESPOND BACK.
Thank you and have a fabulous week!!!

The Exchange will remain open should the federal government shut down. Although the Exchange is part of the federal government, 97 percent of our budget comes from customer sales, less than 3 percent from tax dollars. Some transactions may be delayed, such as the purchase of firearms, which require background checks or other federal government actions.
The Exchange will do everything possible to continue to support the men and
women who serve America and their families.

Balfour Beatty Lifeworks Coordinator seeking donations
Hello!
My name is Amanda, the Lifeworks Coordinator through Balfour Beatty Communities for MHAFB. I am looking forward to planning many events and activities for you and your family in the near future. We are just getting the ball rolling! I will only be successful in this endeavor with your help. As we plan them, our events will be posted on our webpage and facebook page. They will also be announced by flyer throughout the community. Still, word of mouth is one of the most powerful forms of communicating the dates and times of our events. I ask for your assistance with this!
At the moment we are working on creating a fun and exciting place to host our LifeWorks events until our community center is built. This place will be called LifeWorks House. We will hold a contest to rename the house at a later date. LifeWorks House will be created and located in one of the older homes on base. There are a few items that we will need for this. If you are cleaning out and have some things you are looking to get out of your hair, we would greatly appreciate any donations! All items donate will only be used for events and activities planned for military families that will be no cost to attended… again, ALL activities and events planned through Balfour Beatty are FREE to military families. We are so excited about this program and look forward to serving our military through this avenue. Below is a list of items that we need for this particular project. You can drop off your items at the housing office to be given to me. I am also willing to come to you to pick up your donations. Please pass the word!
Because we have several ladies here at the housing office named Amanda, when you call or visit the housing office you will need to ask for LC (LifeWorks Coordinator.) This helps eliminate confusion.
Thank
you again,
Amanda
